The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of an impending indefinite strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to honor the 2009 agreement made with the union. Prof. Timothy Namo, ASUU’s Bauchi Zonal Coordinator, revealed this during a press conference held on Friday in Jos.
According to Namo, the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) issued a 21-day ultimatum after its meeting in August. However, the government has not addressed any of the union’s concerns.
“At the end of the 21-day ultimatum, we issued another 14-day ultimatum starting from September 23. If ASUU shuts down public universities, Nigerians should hold the federal government responsible,” Namo warned.
He highlighted key unresolved issues, including the incomplete renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, unpaid salaries for three-and-a-half months, salaries for academic staff on adjunct appointments, and outstanding third-party deductions. Other concerns include inadequate funding for the revitalization of public universities, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) as outlined in the 2023 budget, the unchecked proliferation of universities, and the non-implementation of visitation panel reports.
