The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has expressed frustration over the unclear status of efforts to release Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was abducted from the National Eye Centre, Kaduna State.

In a virtual National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, 11 August 2024, the NEC highlighted the lack of definitive progress despite the expiration of the two-week deadline set for her release.
“The NEC noted the unclear status of progress regarding the release of our abducted colleague,” the communique stated.
It further observed that “although there were reports of actions being taken, there was no definitive information on the specific activities or concrete assurances from the security agencies regarding the release of our abducted colleague.”

The absence of clear updates from security agencies has prompted NARD to take decisive action. The NEC resolved that each local centre would hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) this week to address the situation and determine a unified course of action.

“Following these meetings, a demonstration march will be organized within hospital premises to draw attention to the issue and express collective dissatisfaction.
“A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday, 14th August 2024, to address the ongoing abduction and announce plans for hospital demonstrations across all centers.

“Additionally, the NEC has extended its ultimatum by two weeks to allow more time for the Government and security agencies to act. Should there be no substantial progress, NARD has warned it will resort to industrial action nationwide
