High Chief Barr. Emeka Nwala, Chairman of the National Assembly Legislative Aides Forum (NASSLAF), has issued a stern warning against any actions that might undermine the credibility of the upcoming Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) election.
Nwala condemned any attempt to discredit the election through dubious means, particularly by those within the electoral body who might seek to manipulate the process for personal gain. He revealed that there are indications of plans to sabotage a leading candidate through unethical tactics.
In a signed letter dated Friday, July 19, 2024, Nwala emphasized the need for lawyers to exemplify strong leadership. He cautioned the NBA electoral body against reverting to past practices where electoral disputes ended up in court due to mistrust. Such a scenario, he argued, would be a significant step backward.
Nwala insisted that every lawyer’s vote must be counted fairly. He warned that any attempts to compromise the election’s integrity would bring shame to the association, potentially leading to its fragmentation. He stressed that security agencies, skilled in cybercrime detection, have been alerted and are monitoring the situation to prevent any illegal activities.
Nwala declared that the NBA is not an organization where irregularities are tolerated. He assured that cyber security experts would be vigilant during the election, ready to apprehend anyone attempting to disrupt the process. As Chairman of the 10th Assembly NASSLAF, he affirmed that strict consequences would follow for those caught in misconduct.
“We strongly warn the NBA Electoral Body against any rigging or cyber manipulation. The repercussions will be severe. Any attempt to undermine the intelligence of lawyers will be firmly resisted. Lawyers must lead by example in the electoral process. We cannot afford to repeat past mistakes where elections were resolved in court; this is unacceptable. I urge the electoral body to ensure that every vote counts. The NBA must not become a subject of ridicule, as this could lead to its disintegration. If we fail in this election, it will undermine our authority to hold the government accountable. Cybersecurity experts are closely monitoring the election. Numerous situation rooms have been established. Security agencies specializing in cybercrime are on standby to ensure the election is free and fair, and those attempting to compromise the system will face serious consequences,” Nwala asserted.
