The Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Political Violence and Missing Persons, chaired by Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, commenced its proceedings on Monday.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State inaugurated the commission to investigate cases of political violence and missing persons spanning from 2015 to 2023.
Justice Zuwaira, during the inaugural sitting, said the commission’s mandate is to investigate the prevalent cases of missing persons and to propose lasting solutions to the issues of politically motivated violence and missing children in the state.
She said, “The commission will identify victims of various forms of violence associated with the 2015, 2019, and 2023 general elections and assess the resulting loss of lives and properties.”
She also affirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring that the sponsors and perpetrators of political violence are brought to justice.
Justice Zuwaira pledged the commission’s dedication to fulfilling its mandate diligently and impartially, without succumbing to any external pressures.
To submit memoranda or petitions, she invited individuals, groups, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as victims and relatives of victims of political violence and missing persons.
