A source at the airport said the plane landed but slipped out of the runway, causing panic among the passengers.

She said, “The plane skidded off the runway due to the wet surface after landing and blocked the runway.”

The source who spoke on condition of anonymity said no damage was done to the plane and no casualty was recorded, saying “It happens, but it is nothing to worry about.”

She added that the plane blocked a significant part of the runway, stopping other aircraft from taking off or landing , but that efforts were being made to remove it from the runway.

Also, a traveller who left Yenagoa in Bayelsa State for the airport said that following the development, scheduled flights at the facility were delayed, while some inbound flights were cancelled.

He said, “We had already boarded around 3.45pm and were preparing to take off when the Value Jet incident happened.

“We could not take off because it blocked the runaway. Airport officials worked very hard to move it out of the runway. Our plane got to Abuja around 7.30pm.”

Another eyewitness who spoke on a popular Radio Station in Port Harcourt (Nigeria Info) monitored by our correspondent said the aircraft stuck on the runaway, though no damage was done to it.

He said, “Around 3:38pm, the Value Jet aircraft skid of the runway on the end of the edge of runway 03 when it was leaving on landing because of wet surface.

“So it happens, but presently the air space has been on shut down. Not that they are not working again, but they need to get the aircraft off the runway first before you can have other people fly or land.”
