Soldiers from the Nigerian Army are said to have stopped rebels from the Indigenous People of Biafra from attacking the Forward Operating Base in Imo State.
The Army claimed that the soldiers on the ground fiercely resisted the IPOB rebels’ attempts to storm its base.
The statement said: “On the Owerri-Onitsha expressway, troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, serving in the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army Area of Responsibility, have successfully thwarted an attack on the Forward Operating Base at Ukwuorji by the Indigenous People of Biafra and their armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network.”
On August 20, 2023, the irredentist fighters made an effort to attack the troops, but they were defeated by the alert forces’ overwhelming weaponry. While two fighters were detained and others fled, one fighter was neutralized by the soldiers.
“One car, one cell phone, one machete, nine empty cases of spent 7.62 mm special ammunition, and one empty case of spent 12.7 mm ammunition were found at the scene of the gunfight.”
He added that following a thorough operation in Borno, a Boko Haram fighter and his spouse turned themselves in to the authorities.
Another occurrence was the surrender of a Boko Haram member and his spouse to soldiers of the 26 Task Force Brigade Garrison in Gwoza, following the military’ vigorous combat operations against rebels in the northeast. One AK-47 rifle and ten live rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition are among the items found on the terrorist, the statement continued.
Onyema further revealed that on August 21, bandits planning an attack on a Zamfara State hamlet obstructed troops participating in another operation.
He said that four motorcycles, two AK-47 Riffles, and the deaths of two of the bandits were the results of their actions.
