The Nigerian Police Force, Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a policeman, Kabiru Odeyemi, for killing a 24-year-old generator repairer, Idris Bakare, in the state.
This was announced on Twitter on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, while responding to a report on June 1 by newsmen.
The police spokesperson wrote: “The recommendation for the dismissal of Inspector Kabiru Odeyemi was approved today. This paves the way for his arraignment which will take place on Friday, July 7, 2023.
“The Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, assures Lagosians of his unwavering determination to police the state within the dictates of the rule of law, civility and respect for human life.”
The press had on June 1 reported that the family members of the deceased had demanded the release of his corpse and that justice be done.
The police later released Idris’ remains to his family after newsmen report about the delay by the police in releasing his corpse to the family for burial.
However, the source added that the family believed the police must be trying to sweep the matter under the carpet as the spokesperson for the state police command had yet to make any comment on the case.
The family member had explained that the police officer that shot Idris was not on duty at the time, noting that the cop always came around to harass and torment people in the area.
“The officer always comes around to harass and torment people a lot. He is worse than (the defunct) SARS. The police have refused to release the body of our brother to us. According to them, they want to carry out some tests on him including autopsy.”
“They are already prolonging the matter; we want to know what they want to do with our brother’s body because we don’t want a situation where he would be tagged as a cultist which will deny us from getting justice,” he had added.
