The Spiritual Director of Canaanland Adoration Ministries, Rev. Fr. Magnus Ebere has raised concern over the impact of flooding on food security in Nigeria.

In a statement on Thursday, Ebere, better known as Fr E- Dey Work, urged the authorities to employ measures to avert food shortage.

The clergyman noted that more than 569,000 hectares of farmland across the country had been destroyed.

The priest charged citizens and companies to assist the government in helping persons and families hit by the flood.

Ebere called for additional intervention in health assistance to victims, especially women, children and the aged.

“There is no gift that is too small for a man in need. Let us not wait for so much when the little we can do will go a long way”, he said.

There are fears that this year’s devastating floods and climate change will increase food prices from December.

About 3 million people in 34 states are affected by the floods; 1.4 million persons are displaced and over 600 dead.

The International Federation of the Red Cross/Red Crescent (IFRC) has issued a Floods Emergency Appeal of $13million to provide water, cash and shelter.

Last week, United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, Matthias Schmale urged donors and the international community to contribute to the flood response quickly and generously.
