US-based international media conglomerate, the Cable News Network (CNN) raised eyebrows among Nigerians and observers of the country’s political scene in a recent news report when it incorrectly identified the immediate past Governor of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, Sen. Kashim Shettima, as the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 presidential election.
Currently a member of the Nigerian Senate, Shettima, who governed the Borno State from 2011 to 2019, is actually the vice-presidential running-mate to the national leader of the party and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Since the broadcast, not a few Nigerians have reacted in various ways, with some decrying the omission and calling for a retraction, while others see it as more than just an omission.
