The Nigerian Bar Association, Calabar Branch (the “Doyen Bar”) today began her 2022 law week.

The Law Week which will run from Monday, the 4th to Sunday, 10th day of April, 2022, is themed “We, the People: Agenda for National* Consensus”.

The event will feature prominent personalities in the legal space as well as distinguished personalities from other sectors of society, who will be speaking on various topics.

Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mrs. Nella Andem-Ewa Rabana, SAN while speaking to journalists noted that a stellar ensemble of speakers had been put together to ensure that they do justice to the theme.

The Chairman of the NBA Calabar Branch, Mr. Attah Ochinke also assured participants that the discussions will be intellectually rich.

He noted that now more than ever was the time to discuss issues regarding Defining Nigeria’s future, Restructuring and the need to ensure that leaders understand that decisions must be taken in the interest of the people.

This year’s Law Week comes against the backdrop of clamours for constitutional amendments, restructuring, independence and autonomy.

The plenary sessions will explore the role of various facets of society, such as the legal, mental, social and cultural aspects, in the struggle for national cohesion.

The Law Week will be packed with numerous activities such as a City Walk, Free Legal Clinic, Plenary Sessions, Novelty Football Match, a visit to the prisions and to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospita and lots more.

There will also be a Flag Off of the Launching for a new Doyen Bar Secretariat.

Distinguished personalities scheduled to speak during the course of the Law Week include Tein T.S. Jack-Rich, CEO of Belemaoil Nigeria Ltd, senior Counsel, Mr. George Etomi, Sen. Gershom Bassey, Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba, SAN, Hon. Onofiok Luke, fiery human rights lawyer, Frank Tietie, J. K. Gadzama, SAN, Y. C. Maikyau, SAN, Mr. Jonathan Taidi, UN CEDAW Rep, Esther Eghobamen, Amb. Nkoyo Toyo, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, EFCC Secretary, Dr. George Ekpungu, Mrs. Anne Eta of St. Anne’s, Mr. Kunle Lawal of the Electoral College, Mr. Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, Policy analyst, Jide Ojo, Ndodeye Bassey-Obongha of GPI, Prof. Jacob Dada, Prof. I. N. E Worugji
and the Executive Secretary of the NHRC Mr. Tony Ojukwu.

Other speakers include Ms Dorothy Njemanze of DNF, Mr. George Tyendezwa, cyber crimes expert, Mr. Eneji Amajama, Dr. Bassey Edet, MD, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Ms Anne Agi and Ms Nella Andem-Ewa.

Supreme Court Justice Hon. Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, JSC, will also be in attendance. He will be joined by the the Chief Justice of CRS, Hon. Justice Akon Ikpeme and Hon. Justice I. L. Ojukwu of the FHC.

The tradition rulers were not left out as His Royal Highnesses, Etim Okon Edet, the Paramount Ruler of Bakassi/Chairman of the CRS Traditional Rulers Council and HRH Prof. Hogan Itam, have also been invited to speak.

Events of the law week also includes a novelty football match between young female lawyers and senior counsel, visits to the Prisons and the Psychiatric Hospital as well as a socials night on Saturday the 9th of April, 2022.

There will be a thanksgiving Service on Sunday.

The Law Week promises to be an opportunity to learn, contribute and unwind.
