The House of Representatives Committee on Finance, on Wednesday, decried the use of a manual accounting system by the National Examination Council (NECO).

NECO appeared before the committee on Wednesday, however, the lawmakers were startled when an Assistant Director in the council, Babatunde Kasali, revealed that the council still uses manual to compose their accounting.

The chairman of the committee, James Faleke and other members of the committee could not contain their amusements at the revelation.

“Manual? You don’t have computers? No accounting software?

“Is accounting part of the course students take under NECO? And you are not practising?

“Even if they should take you (Mr Kasali) away from there tomorrow, somebody who is coming in should be able to punch in keys and see what’s going on. How do you reconcile?”

Following the inability of the council to provide answers, the committee resolved that NECO should reappear in two weeks.

Mr Faleke also threatened to block their account, until they can adopt a proper accounting system.

Ebikibina Ogborodi, the Acting Registrar of NECO revealed that some state governments are owing the council money for the registration of students.

According to him, Zamfara state is topping the list with N1.2 billion in debt.
