Segun Sowunmi, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing him of pushing Nigeria to the edge of disaster through excessive tribalism and economic mismanagement. In a fiery statement from his Abeokuta home on Monday, Sowunmi warned that the nation is dangerously close to unraveling due to the current government’s divisive policies.
Sowunmi, who is also the founder of The Alternative, a platform aimed at challenging the government’s approach to governance, condemned what he described as Tinubu’s “Yoruba-only” administration. He pointed to the president’s economic team, which he claimed is disproportionately made up of people from the Yoruba ethnic group, arguing that this tribal favoritism is undermining the unity of the country.
“The country has never been more fragile since 1914,” Sowunmi declared. “Under Tinubu, we’re seeing the collapse of any national unity, with government policies that are purely based on tribal lines. This excessive tribalisation is the root of Nigeria’s deepening problems.”
Sowunmi didn’t mince words as he criticized Tinubu’s economic decisions, particularly the controversial devaluation of the naira and the removal of fuel subsidies. These moves, he argued, have pushed Nigeria into a perilous state, threatening the very existence of the nation. He warned that if the country does not address the tribal and economic rifts created by the current administration, it could face irreparable damage.
“The government is dangerously taking us down a path where Nigeria may cease to exist as we know it,” Sowunmi continued. “The excessive tribalism in policy, combined with the global economic challenges and internal mismanagement, is sending Nigeria straight into crisis.”
Sowunmi, who served as spokesperson for the PDP’s 2019 presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, stated that Nigeria’s problems are too complex to be ignored. He argued that although past leaders may not have been perfect, the current situation is far worse, with the country’s unity hanging by a thread.
He also addressed questions about his own political ambitions, reiterating that he is the best candidate to lead the PDP and reposition the party to effectively challenge the current government’s policies.
“I’m ready to lead the PDP, because Nigeria needs a leader who understands the gravity of the situation,” Sowunmi said. “We cannot afford to stay silent as the country is being torn apart by tribal and economic crises.”
With his stark warning, Sowunmi made it clear that the current trajectory under Tinubu’s leadership could spell disaster for Nigeria, urging citizens to stand up against the divisive forces threatening the nation’s survival.
