Senator, representing Osun Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Dr. Ajibola Basiru, has thrown his weight behind life imprisonment for kidnap.
Contributing to debates, at plenary, on Bill to amend the Criminal Code Act cap c.38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, Senator Basiru submitted that the proposed removal of the two-month limitation on prosecution for the defilement of minor and mentally challenged person, is in the right order.
Senator Basiru also supported the notion that rape should be made gender-neutral as he solidly supported life jail for kidnapping considering its gravity and the rate at which people commit it these days with reckless abandon.
Contributing also to the debate on the Bill for the National Land Drainage, Flood Control and other matters 2019, the Chairman, Senate Committee on the Diaspora cautioned that the bill should be thoroughly scrutinized at the Committee stage to avert containing provisions that will concern developmental control.
Raising a point of order premised on section 4(7)of the 1999 constitution as amended and the decision of the Supreme Court in Attorney General of Lagos vs Attorney General of the Federation, where the Apex Court ruled that the Urban and Regional Planning is a residual matter coming within the legislative powers of the State, Senator Basiru opined that the Bill be referred to the appropriate committee for further scrutiny.
