The Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association Welfare Committee, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau SAN said that the Annual Criminal Law Review Conference of the Rule of Law Development Foundation (ROLDF), since her inception in 2016 has indeed contributed immensely to the framework of the criminal justice system in Nigeria.
He said that the conference constantly reviews Judicial and Legislative Developments in the administration of Criminal Justice, by bringing together erudite scholars, stakeholders, and interested parties to forge a better path for the delivery of justice.
Y.C Maikyau S.A.N, made this remark on Monday while delivering his goodwill message at the Opening Ceremony Of The 4th Annual Conference of Foundation.
He said: “One cannot deny the impact the criminal justice system has on the economy as it is ordinarily designed to deliver justice to all; however, where this task is carried out haphazardly, or through a short-sighted lens, the unfortunate result is a destabilized and disgruntled citizenry which invariably affects economic situations.
“Whatever the case may be, the criminal justice system must as of necessity be continually reviewed and updated to accommodate regulatory and enforcement measures to bring punishment in line with the changing pattern of criminal behavior.
“Indeed I had the privilege of studying the program for this year’s conference and I am elated to observe the rich quality of same both in terms of subject matter and resource persons.
“I only urge that the recommendations and observations arising from our discussions be reduced into actionable steps to be adopted as a policy document by the various regulators of our criminal justice system. “
The Learned silk also lauded the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, J.B Daudu, SAN, for being instrumental in having one of the topmost foundations which goal is geared towards the development of Criminal Law Jurisprudence in the country.
“I must express particular admiration for the Coordinator and alter ego of the ROLDF , Chief J.B Daudu SAN (our past President of the Nigerian Bar Association ).
“J. B. Daudu SAN is a celebrated and pre-eminent legal personality whose contribution towards the development of Criminal Law Jurisprudence in Nigeria will remain forever etched in the annals of history.
“Our law reports in this country are littered with several notable cases conducted by Mr Daudu which relate to almost every aspect of substantive criminal law and procedure.
“He is indeed the proverbial ‘’Master of the Game’’ who has mentored and inspired several legal practitioners, myself inclusive.
“ROLDF under Mr Daudu’s watch has continued to be one of the topmost campaigners/core advocates on the insistence that matters in all areas of human activities are strictly in line with the rule of law as a way of life and this must be celebrated.”
