A Legal Practitioner by the name N.N. Alaska Esq., has called on the Degema Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, to make an official Press Conference with respect to what he described as a brazen display of police brutality to members of the noble profession.
N.N. Alasia Esq., made this call following an alleged illegal arrest and detention of one Mr. Onari Taylor Harry Esq., by men of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the statement of appeal made available to TheNigerialawyer (TNL), the said Taylor Harry was arrested and detained by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) because of a Quit Notice he had issued in his capacity as a legal practitioner on the behest of another lawyer-client; that efforts to secure his bail proved abortive as the police was hell-bent on taking him to Abuja.
“I set out and got to the station around 6:30 pm and met him where he was; he was caused to be undressed and thrown into detention.
“While looking for the IPO in respect of his case, I was joined by the head of Chambers and a counsel from his Chambers. We proceeded to meet with the Commander in Charge of that unit to officially lodge our complaints to him, whereupon, he brought Onari Taylor Harry and asked him what actually happened.
“Onari Taylor Harry stated that he was briefed by a client whom herself was a lawyer, to issue a seven days notice to quit to her tenants, which he did in his capacity as a legal practitioner. The commander then told us that the arrest and detention of Onari Taylor Harry Esq., was not effected by him or his officers, but a team from Abuja and so requested the team to also state their side of the story. They confirmed that Onari Taylor Harry was arrested in connection to a quit notice he issued for a building in Port Harcourt.
“All attempts to secure his bail was turned down by the police, who insisted that Onari Taylor Harry Esq., must be taken to Abuja tomorrow despite all our pleadings. At this point we finally left the police station around 8:30 pm.
“Consequently, I will appeal to the Degema branch of the Nigerian Bar Association to make an official press conference tomorrow for this brazen display of police brutality to members of the noble legal profession,” he said.
TNL recalls that there was an alert that Mr. Onari Taylor Harry Esq., has been arrested and detained by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit Aluu. N.N. Alasia, is therefore, drawing the attention of the National PRO of NBA to the act of brutality by the Nigeria Police.
