The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has reversed police order closing food markets in the state, describing it as counterproductive.

The state police command had on Tuesday ordered closure of food markets in the state to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The state recorded an index case of the pandemic last Friday, necessitating the governor to announce a lockdown on the state on Saturday.

As a result, the police in the state on Tuesday ordered the closure of food markets in order to enhance social distancing.

But on Wednesday, the governor disbanded the police community food arrangement and ordered the traders to return to the old order.

The state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C-Don Adinuba, said, “ We have asked food sellers to return to their original markets.”

Adinuba said the designated places became too small and defeated the social distancing aim, hence the need to take them back to their markets.

He said the markets would operate three times a week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8am to 3pm.”
