In a significant step towards fostering collaboration between two vital institutions, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) held a productive meeting to discuss issues of mutual interest. The meeting, attended by the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and a delegation from the FRSC led by CLA, ACM KD Gonji, mni, focused on the annual renewal of the Proof of Ownership Certificate (POC), amendments to the FRSC Act of 2007, and other collaborative initiatives.

The FRSC team congratulated Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, on his recent election as NBA President and expressed optimism about working with the new leadership. ACM KD Gonji highlighted the importance of building a strong partnership between the FRSC and NBA, particularly in areas impacting public safety and legal frameworks.

A key agenda item was the rationale behind the annual renewal of the POC. The FRSC delegation outlined two main objectives:

Accurate Vehicle Data: Ensuring up-to-date and accurate information on registered vehicles and their owners.
Enhanced Security: Strengthening national security by maintaining a comprehensive database that can assist in crime prevention and vehicle recovery efforts.

In his response, the NBA President acknowledged the importance of accurate vehicle data and improved security. However, he emphasized that the annual POC renewal could be achieved without imposing financial burdens on motorists. He suggested that an effective collaboration between the FRSC and state governments could streamline the process, guaranteeing a robust database while securing lives and properties on Nigerian roads.

The NBA President also addressed concerns surrounding the pending amendment to the FRSC Act, 2007, particularly the provision for arming certain members of the Corps. He urged the FRSC to engage in public enlightenment to clarify misconceptions, noting that the provision for arming the Corps has existed since 1992.

The meeting concluded with discussions on the establishment of a Joint Committee between the NBA and FRSC. This committee will serve as a platform for continuous dialogue and collaboration on issues impacting road safety, vehicle registration, and legal reforms.
