The major cause of failed construction projects in Nigeria is the absence of quantity surveyors, Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has said.

El-Rufai, who said all road projects in Kaduna State had the inputs of quantity surveyors, called on the Federal Government to also work with surveyors to achieve good results.

The governor spoke in Abuja at the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors business dinner.

He said, “At the root of many of our failed projects and programmes in this country is the absence of quantity surveying.

“In Kaduna State, we insist that for every road, there is a quantity surveyor attached to do the quantities, while engineers do the sampling. This is what we should insist on at the national level.”

El-Rufai also stated that his administration had outlawed the use of Bills of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation for all construction projects in the state.

He described the document as alien to international procurement standards.
