Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights activist, Femi Falana, has called on religious organisations in the country to ensure that political leaders within their congregations uphold the oaths of office they swore to
Falana made the appeal in Lagos during the 30th-anniversary celebration of Pastor Evans Darlington Mozurunyem’s King of Kings Evangelical Ministries International.
In his keynote address, Falana stressed the vital role of religious bodies in promoting good governance and holding leaders accountable. He highlighted that many of Nigeria’s political leaders identify as Christians or Muslims, making it imperative for religious leaders to demand accountability from them.
“Religious leaders must hold political leaders accountable to the oaths they have taken. Many of our leaders are either Christians or Muslims, and it is the duty of church and mosque leaders to ensure they live up to their responsibilities,” Falana said.
While congratulating Pastor and Pastor Mrs Mozurunyem on their achievements and the impact of their ministry, Falana underscored the crucial role religious leaders play in shaping societal morals and ensuring leaders are guided by principles of justice, equity, and compassion.
He also urged leaders to perform their duties in line with Biblical and Quranic teachings. Additionally, Falana encouraged religious organisations to ease the burdens on their members and collaborate with the government to improve citizens’ lives. He called on them to mobilise their congregants to demand their rights under the law without resorting to violence.
Pastor Evans Darlington Mozurunyem also spoke during the event, urging Nigerians to remain prayerful and patient in the face of challenges. He emphasised the importance of collective efforts in building a society where the rights and dignity of every citizen are upheld.
“Prayers, supplications, and patience are crucial for overcoming life’s challenges. Together, we must strive to create a society that respects the rights and dignity of all,” Pastor Mozurunyem said.
