Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has issued a warning to members of the Islamic police Hisbah Board, urging them not to misuse their authority to persecute innocent citizens.
During the inauguration of the board on Thursday, Aliyu explained the importance of respecting human rights and adhering to the law while carrying out their duties.
The governor clarified that while the Hisbah Board is empowered by law to make arrests, it is not a substitute for the state police and should work closely with security agencies to handle suspects.
“We aim to combat social vices and promote moral and religious values, as Sokoto is predominantly a Muslim community,” the governor said, stressing the need for the Hisbah to support the welfare and justice of the people.
The governor urged the people of the state to support the board and emphasized that it has been equipped with all the necessary resources to carry out its duties.
“There is a law governing its operations, and we have appointed individuals of impeccable character to manage the board, along with providing suitable office accommodation and operational vehicles,” he stated.
“We will continue to monitor their activities to ensure they remain focused on their constitutional responsibilities.”
Also addressing the gathering, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, represented by the Wazirin Sokoto, Professor Sambo Junaidu, disclosed the importance of granting the board operational autonomy.
“This is the only way they can effectively achieve their goal of eliminating social vices in our society,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Commander of Kano State’s Hisbah Commission and respected preacher, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, commended Governor Aliyu for his foresight and outlined the key qualities expected from Hisbah members, including patience, religious knowledge, and wisdom.
