The Lagos state police command has charged Sunday Okodo, the man who knocked its officer into a canal with his vehicle, with attempted murder.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the command’s spokesman, broke the news in a statement on Friday.

We earlier had reported how David Zapania, a police inspector, was knocked into a canal by Okodo while trying to evade arrest on Wednesday as security operatives tried to stop him.

According to Adejobi, the suspect was arraigned before a mobile court in Oshodi on six count charges which include driving against traffic (one way), resisting arrest as well as reckless and dangerous driving.

Other charges against him are driving with an invalid driver’s license, assaulting a police officer, and attempted murder.

The spokesman said the driver will be remanded at the Badadry correctional centre till March 26, which is the next adjournment date.

He added that there would be no bail and fine until the trial is concluded.

The police had on Thursday revealed that the affected officer had been discharged from the hospital, adding that he remains healthy.

“The police inspector was rescued and rushed to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Center where he was attended to and discharged, but sustained a fracture on his left hand,” it had said.
