A high court sitting in Onitsha on Monday awarded the sum of N25m as damages in favour of Onitsha based lawyer, Ogbonaya Jacob Obasi for assaulting him.

In the judgment delivered in the fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by the applicant, with the SUIT NO:O/ MISC.312/2019, Hon. Justice Theophine U. Oguji, also ordered the Police to tender a written apology to the applicant which must be published on Vanguard Newspaper.

During the press conference called immediately after the judgment by Justus Uche Ijeoma Esq., A.G Ogbachalu Esq., B.U Igwe Esq, they noted that today’s Judgment is an erudite one and a precedent that will be long remembered. Justus said that the Bar will in a month time proceed against the Respondents with the Criminal aspect of the Charge as it will serve as a deterrent to
other Policemen in Anambra State.

Legaldeskng recalled in October 2019, that police officers attached to the Onitsha area police commander were accused of brutalizing Obasi.

The branch chairman in a press conference on the 20th October, 2017 demanded for the sum of N100m as compensation and further threatened to seek legal action if the police fails to meet their demands.
