CATEGORY OF WOMEN A MAN IS PROHIBITED FROM MARRYING.

In Nigeria, a man is prohibited from marrying his:

1. Sister
2. Sister’s daughter
3. Father’s sister
4. Brother’s daughter
5. Mother’s sister
6. Wife’s mother
7. Father’s wife
8. Wife’s daughter
9. Son’s wife
10. Wife’s daughter’s daughter
11. Wife’s grandmother
12. Grandfather’s wife
13. Wife’s son’s daughter
14. Son’s son’s wife
15. Daughter’s son’s wife

However, a man may be permitted to marry the category of persons in 6-15 in the above list ONLY if he makes an application in writing to a Judge.

If the judge is satisfied that the circumstances of the particular case are so exceptional, he may grant the application.
