Bayern Munich have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Liverpool to sell Thiago Alcantara to the Premier League champions.
“That was Thiago’s wish,” Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed after reports that a deal has been reached.
“On the one hand, I regret that, in Thiago, a great player who won the treble with us just a few weeks ago leaves Bayern.
“But it was a big wish of his to something new as he approached the end of his career. After long discussions, we came to an internal agreement.”
According to the Athletic, Liverpool have struck a deal worth €30m (£27.4m) to sign the midfielder.
The Spaniard was crucial as Bayern won the treble last season but is looking for a new challenge with one year remaining on his contract. Bayern have insisted they would not stand in his way if he wanted to leave and Liverpool have been the front-runners to sign him.
Talks are said to have accelerated since Monday, with Bayern telling Liverpool they wanted a deal done before the Bundesliga season kicks off.
According to Paul Joyce of the Times, Liverpool have now decided to press on with the deal regardless of whether they sell a midfielder. Georginio Wijnaldum had been linked with a move to Barcelona but now appears more content to remain at Anfield.
That report also claims the fee will be just £20m, with £5m in bonuses, and Thiago will sign a four-year deal.
