A lecturer with the Federal University Dutsinma, Katsina State was killed and his two sons abducted by bandits early hours of today, Tuesday. Two other persons were also abducted during the attack.

The lecturer identified as Dr. Tiri Gyang was attacked around 1:30 am at his residence in Yarima Low-Cost, Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.

A close associate of the family who spoke to Vanguard on the condition of anonymity said the hoodlums gained access into the deceased compound by climbing the fence.

According to her, “Dr Tiri’s two sons were at the parlour at the time of the incident. The elder saw the bandit entering their compound through the fence and ran to the father’s room to inform him.

“The bandits finally invaded Dr. Tiri’s apartment breaking in through the window in the girls’ room. Meanwhile, while attempting to break in, the girls ran into their mother’s room and together they all hid in her bathroom.”

She further disclosed that “the bandits immediately took custody of Dr Tiri’s younger son
found in the sitting room along with his elder brother forcing them to cry out.

“Dr Tiri was left with no choice but to come out of hiding, appealing to them to carry him along with his sons. The bandits queried why he failed to open the door earlier but he pleaded with them to carry him instead. Finally, they shot him before taking his two sons away.

“Being that it was in the middle of the night, there was no one to rush him to the hospital. However, before help could arrive, he had already died. His remains has been deposited in a mortuary in Katsina,” the source narrated.

The deceased was the Deputy Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, FUDMA. He is survived by his wife and four children, two boys and two girls.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Armaya’u Bichi also confirmed the report. He noted that the hoodlums invaded the home of one Mr. Adeola and abducted two of his sisters. They also seized phones and money from some female staff who reside in the compound.

Also confirming the incident, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, spokesperson Katsina Police Command said, “The bandits attacked a compound behind Comprehensive Hospital Dutsinma LGA, Katsina State and attempted to kidnap 14 occupants of the house. They shot and killed one occupant of the house in the process. Our officers responded and rescued 10 of the residents but they made away with four others. Efforts are being intensified to ensure the rescue of the remaining four victims,” ASP Sadiq said.

Less than a month ago, a similar tragedy struck the university. The hoodlums abducted two staff members and the child of one victim from their homes in Dutsinma’s GRA.
