The Nigerian Bar Association, Ilorin Branch, yesterday held a press conference to address their concerns over the operations and conduct of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), particularly under the leadership of Zonal Commander, Michael Nzekwe.

In a statement on Thursday, the NBA vehemently condemned the alleged unwholesome practices of EFCC officials and operatives, asserting that the agency, like any other government entity, must adhere to the law in its operations. The association expressed their dismay at the reported instances of citizens being arrested and treated in an undignified manner, with limited access to legal representation and family.

The statement signed by Aishat Omotayo Temim, Esq., Acting Chairperson of the NBA, Ilorin Branch, and Ridwan Musa, Esq., Publicity Secretary mentioned a disturbing revelation where arrested suspects are coerced into disengaging their own legal representation and accepting “EFCC-nominated lawyers” in exchange for temporary or permanent freedom. This practice was deemed unacceptable and highlighted in a recent case where a defendant was acquitted by the Kwara State High Court due to non-cooperation with an “EFCC-nominated lawyer.”

The NBA also expressed concern about the alleged collaboration between some legal practitioners and EFCC officials in unethical practices, reminding their colleagues that such misconduct could lead to sanctions, including suspension or withdrawal of their licenses to practice law.

The association’s leadership attempted to engage the Zonal Commander of the EFCC, but they claim he arrogantly declined to meet with them, raising further concerns about his leadership style and attitude towards legal practitioners and citizens.

As a result of these grievances, the NBA, Ilorin Branch, presented a series of resolutions, including calling on the acting Chairman of the EFCC to investigate the Ilorin Zonal office and the immediate transfer of the Zonal Commander, Michael Nzekwe, to a different location. They also issued a warning to their members collaborating with EFCC officials in subduing the rule of law to desist from such practices.

Furthermore, the NBA, Ilorin Branch, called for a boycott of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the EFCC until the transfer of the Zonal Commander is executed.

This move by the Nigerian Bar Association, Ilorin Branch, has raised significant concerns about the conduct and operations of the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Command and has brought attention to the need for transparency, adherence to the rule of law, and respect for citizens’ rights within the agency.
