The governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party, in Akwa Ibom State, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan has called for investigation into the alleged killing of three indigenes of Ibiono Ibom LG of the state where he hails from.

Legaldeskng learnt three persons were allegedly shot dead by police at a polling unit in Oko-Ita community in Ibiono LGA during the elections.

According to the report, the officers allegedly drove into the unit and opened fire on the electorate, killing three persons and went away with the corpses.

Speaking with journalists on Saturday at his unit in Ndidep community, Senator Akpan, who represents Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, while confirming the incident called on the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba to investigate and bring the culprits to book.

He described the election as generally peaceful, but for the unfortunate incident of the killing of three Ibiono Ibom indigenes.

He said: “I’m calling on the police to investigate the incident and follow up with justice. No election is worth the blood of any Akwa Ibom indigene. I have spoken with the Commissioner of Police and he has promised to come for a follow-up on the incident. Three Ibiono Ibom indigenes were killed by the police and they carried the corpses away.”

While commending the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the improvement in the conduct of the election, the senator called on the electoral umpire to ensure that results are transmitted electronically.

“I must commend INEC for the improvement in today’s election. The materials arrived early and voting also started early.

“I want to also call on INEC to ensure that election results are transmitted in realtime on the IReV in order to ensure a credible, fair, and transparent electoral process,” Akpan said.
